Beyond the BoothMaking the Most of SURTEX

As I get ready for Surtex, I am so excited to meet those of you that I have spoken to over the phone and connected with via email. There are so many of you exhibiting this year that I have worked with once or on an on-going basis, and I couldn’t be prouder as you set forth to present your art and designs.

I want to remind each of you, the importance of getting out of your booth, when things are slow and, and of course, if you have someone to cover the booth for you. First, I encourage you to meet and get to know other artists and agents around your booth and throughout the show. Building relationships with and learning from other artists and agents is not only smart, but fun!

Secondly, attend a few SURTEX conference classes (link conference classes) offered by key professionals in the industry covering topics from social networking to art licensing and legal protection to color trends. These classes will provide useful insights on the licensing business and give you the opportunity to network with other attendees and the speakers. I’ll be speaking at the Core Basics of Art Licensing: Part 1 and Part 2, held in rooms 1A04 and 1A05 on the first floor of the Jacob Javits Center on Sunday, May 16th (9-10:30 a.m. for Part 1 and 11:30 – 1 p.m. for Part II), and will be available 1-2 p.m. outside the program rooms, if you’d like to introduce yourself. I hope we’ll get to meet!

Third, grab breakfast with other artists from the Art of Licensing Yahoo Group on Monday, May 17th as we gather between 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. (If you take the second escalator down you'll be on the ground floor and directly behind the escalator is the cafeteria. Look for the Art of Licensing Yahoo Group sign.) It doesn’t matter if you aren’t part of the group, as everyone is welcome to stop by, say hi, and bring friends.

And last but not least, I’ll leave you with these thoughts:

Keep your confidence high—nothing sells like a smile.

There is no one like you personally—and no one is creating art like you!

Remember, there isn’t anything you can’t do—especially with a little guidance.

If you have put some thought into creating art that makes you happy and connects with an audience—then you are sure to have some level of success.

And success doesn’t come all at once—success is a journey and you will need to plan for your success and leverage each and every step on that path to make the next steps larger and more fulfilling (personally and financially).

I’m looking forward to meeting each of you, so make sure to stop me if you see me at the show.

Always, J’net

More ANSWERS for FREE

I find answering all of your questions really fun and rewarding. During the last six months I have dedicated one Friday a month to my FREE FRIDAY Q&A. That’s the day you can email me your questions about art licensing, marketing and licensing in general, and I answer them in as much detail as possible. Then you just dial-in for your answers in an easy and informative hour-long phone call. Please spread the word, and put all of our Free Friday’s on your calendar.

The remaining dates for my FREE FRIDAY Q&A’s this year are: November 20th and December 18th. They are always at 9am PST and 12 noon EST. And here’s how you register; just click here. This will take you to our class schedule, just scroll down to the date of the class and click through to the shopping cart. Since they are free, no credit card will be taken, just vital information to register you: Name/email.

Here is a list of questions that I answered in just one of the Q&A sessions; and another recent Q&A included answers to more than 25 questions. I have edited the questions here a bit, but have maintained the “gist” of the question.

I submitted art work to a manufacturer who offered to work it up and put it on their products. She told me if I hadn't heard from her in a certain amount of time for me to contact her. What do you think about that?

As someone who is just starting out in licensing, should I focus my efforts on 2-3 product categories only? If so, should my product mockups be only for the categories I am focusing on, or should I also create mockups for many other categories?

How do you spot trends early? How do trends happen? How do artists originate a trend? Where can I find out more about this topic?

Should samples in specific categories be sent to one manufacturer at a time, or can you submit Xmas Gift bag designs to several manufacturers at once?

Do all art licensing contracts HAVE to state that the manufacturer is the one liable if anyone is injured with the product or during the manufacturing of a product? I hate to negotiate for things if they are not necessary so I am wondering if NOT having a liability clause is a deal breaker in all instances for art licensing.

How does one contact a manufacturer to request a catalog of their products?

What gain is there in exhibiting at two or more trade shows if the same manufacturers are showing up?

What is a normal, healthy time period for you to sign over the licensing rights to a company? Does it vary because of the particular product or not?

How much does luck play in winning a license? And what can one do to increase the odds? What can attitude do to enhance our chances?

Is there a master calendar you can share with us on when we should submit seasonal or holiday material?

When do you believe in cattle calls? How does one make that decision?

Which order of importance are these and why: Content... Style... Image... Writing... and Reputation?

You do have to register for each one separately, but that’s a small price to pay for so much information. Those of you who have attended these in the past, I’d really appreciate your sharing about the experience and I’ll post your comments. Some past Q&A's are available to purchase for only $10, to cover our time.

Sincerely, J'net

Need a bit of free legal advice?

Legalities....whew that's a mouth full. I'm really aware that we all want to protect ourselves and yet it feels like a burden to have to buy legal services, before you know if you need to spend the money. Yes I just described insurance, for that is what legal advice is. And as you should know, I'm not a lawyer, and I'm a big proponent of learning to do as much as you can on your own while you build your art licensing business.

When speaking at the Self-Employment in the Arts Conference in Illinois, I met Elizabeth Russell, an Arts Attorney. I felt she really knows how to explain legal language and nuances so that they are understandable to artists. The goal is to help you understand the terms so that you can quickly review a contact and I'm forever thinking about working as smart and as efficiently as possible while keeping costs down - and yes - absolutely getting the right legal advice for your needs.

I have asked Elizabeth to join me for our first THREE FOR FREE programs, where we will take a complex topic and break it down into three online classes. These are interviews - three actual classes. I'll be there with Elizabeth to keep it relevant to art licensing and relate the legal aspects to the business decisions you as an artist must make every day. All three classes you can take for FREE on November 4th, 11th and 18th, as we tackle Copyrights, Trademarks and Contract Language, respectively.

So sign up for one or all three by sending an email to info@allartlicensing.com with THREE FOR FREE in the subject line. It's only free to those attending live, so grab your space and mark your calendars. You'll save a bundle and enjoy these dynamic classes.

Sincerely, J'net
